For this campaign, we'll be using the Microlite20 ruleset. It's similar to D&D 3.5/Pathfinder, except far simpler, free, and you can print it off in the form of a mini-rulebook (I've included links to them on the right-hand side of the blog). You can make a character using any of the included classes or races, although as fair warning Lizardmen and Half-orcs are uncommon and will probably not be received well by large portions of the city's population.
For your character's backstory, I'd like at least 3 sentences. More is nice, but not required. Please also give me three beliefs your character feels strongly about, and three goals your character has (A long, medium, and short-term goal would be perfect). Again, more is nice but not required. As long as you have some justification to be in an inn in the market district, your character will be able to be fit into the story quite nicely.
Once you have your character, please reply with your character information and backstory as a comment in this post, and I'll start the campaign in a new post sometime within the next week.
Now for a bit of back-history: Adiroth was built to span the Feycross Canyon. At the base of this canyon lies the stone prison containing the elder dragon Scourgetalon. Scourgetalon was the disaster foretold in the Fifteenth Razax Prophecy, of the legendary Sixteen (It is interpreted that the Sixteenth Razax Prophecy will result in the scouring of all life from the planet). However, thanks to a brave band of heroes, and with the help of the most powerful mages on the continent, Scourgetalon was defeated.
Due to his immortal nature, Scourgetalon cannot actually be killed, as he regenerates fatal wounds in mere seconds and is resistant to all but the most powerful of spells. As a result, after his defeat, he was imprisoned in a huge stone cell, chained to the ground with adamantium shackles that have been fused with the rocky mantle of the planet itself. In addition, the prison itself has been sealed with Twelve Sapphire Seals, crystal-inlaid ceramic tablets the size of a tavern table an gilt with the finest metals and enamels.
These Seals help keep the dragon somnolent, and allow him to remain asleep while the unceasing line of workers harvest the various reagents and raw materials from the dragon, taking advantage of his unceasing regeneration. While the Canyon was originally mined for gems and precious metals in the walls, now Adiroth's prime exports are all derived from the dragon; Indeed, the modern city was built around the trade of dragon blood and venom for spell reagents, scales and leather for armor, teeth and horns for weapons, and meat for foodstuffs. As a result of these prized exports, Adiroth is the wealthiest city in the Charoc nation, and leads the rest of the region in terms of diplomacy and political power.
To the north-east, the city borders (and in some cases, is inside of) the Thoury Forest, an ancient jungle teeming with both mundane and supernatural creatures. One of the other exports from the city is rare and exotic hardwoods harvested from the forest, earning the ire of many of the creatures and intelligent residents of the forest. The city (and nation as a whole) are still on supposedly neutral terms with the nation of Drufen to the south after the last great war a decade previously.
Despite the recent outbreak of the Stumbling Death plague in the poorer districts, Adiroth remains a bustling metropolis and the hub of activity for the entire continent. Only a fool would seek to disturb that...

My name is Natalie Kranos. I am a hunter/trapper (Ranger). I make my living selling live animals and their various components once dead, from the Thoury Forest. I keep away from sentient beings since I do not condone murder. I have a wary truce with the sentient beings and a passing knowledge of their customs, practices, language and territory.
ReplyDeleteI was born and raised in Adiroth and know the city and many of its citizens well. I do not condone what they are doing to Scrougetalon even if I understand the necessity of keeping him sealed away. My parents are both dead, but I have a brother who went off exploring that I have not seen or heard from in four or five years. For the last six or so years I have lived in the forest only coming into the city once I’ve collected enough goods for trade in the market district.
I am in the city now on a business trip to try and set up new contracts with shop keepers to sell or buy my goods. It took longer than expected and I took a room at a local inn.
Beliefs:
Waste not, want not.
All life is sacred and the life should not be taken from those that can understand that.
Learn to survive on your own and you can do anything you set your mind to.
Goals
Short: Get more businesses interested in buying my goods.
Medium: Acquire an apprentice or a partner.
Long: Build a better relationship with the sentient beings of the forest.
(need anything else Austin?)

You mean character name or player name?
ReplyDeletePlayer name, since your character name is included in your backstories. It just helps me keep track of who's-who.
ReplyDeleteNew rule thingy for magic users:
ReplyDeleteYou may use one spell from your spell level without a cost in hp, 2 spells from spells of 1 level lower, 3 spells from spells 2 levels lower, etc. You can cast spells beyond this limit, but that's when the listed hp penalty starts to apply.
Additionally, the hp cost has been changed from (lvl*2)+1 to (lvl*2)-1 (so lvl 1 costs 1 hp, lvl 2 costs 3 hp, etc. Lvl 0 cost 1 hp per 2 lvl 0 spells cast beyond your daily limit)
This is since, after taking a second glance at the rules, spellcasters get royally screwed otherwise at low levels.
Lemme know if you have any other questions.
Mareya Sunfield, better known as “Maya”, was born and raised in Adiroth. She has red hair and bright green eyes and also her very fair skin and pointy ears point towards elven roots even though her mother Carya is human. Maya never met her father but her mother used to tell her he was a great Elven warrior who loved them both very much but unfortunately died while saving the innocent before Maya was born. Although she prefers to believe this story, she has heard people talking behind her back that her father was merely some handsome Elven soldier who seduced the young and pretty barmaid Carya and left the city, when she told him she was expecting his child, never to be seen again. Carya raised her daughter on her own and now owns her own tavern in which Maya works as a barmaid. Due to her family history she was often mocked and treated condescendingly by other people in the city.
ReplyDeleteDespite her mother's wishes for her to find a good man, marry, and lead a comfortable life, Maya dreams of adventure and fighting for the good like her father did (according to her mother). Her uncle Cruril, a blacksmith and former soldier, taught her sword fighting alongside his two sons from a very young age on and soon she outperformed her older cousins. To her eighteen's birthday he made her an own longsword as well as a steel shield. Unlike his sister he supports his niece's dreams and talent. So far Maya has only used these gifts in training but for many years she has been thinking about leaving home and using them to protect those who cannot protect themselves.
3 beliefs:
you can make your own destiny
there are things worth fighting for
there is good in everyone
3 goals:
short term: go on an adventure
medium: be respected by people/clear her father's name
long term: become a great warrior and protect the innocent

Annon Nuriel
ReplyDeleteElf Druid
Annon wasn’t comfortable in the city; there were simply too many people. She had arrived in Adiroth three days prior, and she found the crush of bodies, sounds, and smells of the city overwhelming. She longed for the Cail forest in the southeast of Flonnaleth to the north of Charoc. Sill, she was here for her pilgrimage, and she couldn’t return to her tribe without completing her quest to view Scourgetalon of the fifteenth prophecy.
Annon believes as her people believe that all life should be honored and all creatures free. Her people also believe in the truth of the Razax Prophecies. Short term, Annon hopes to leave the city soon, and medium term, she hopes to complete her pilgrimage. Long term, Annon hopes to return to her home.

Roland Strife
ReplyDeleteDwarf Paladin
Roland was born and raised in Adiroth. He spent most of his adult life protecting the seals of Scourgetalon. Despite his dedication and belief in the necessity of keeping Scourgetalon sealed he deeply disagrees with the harvesting of regents from the dragon. He advocates for an economy independent of the sealed dragon and believes it is best to leave to "let sleeping dragons lay".
Roland is a well-built stocky dwarf with short black hair and grey eyes. He is capable of feats of strength, but can be clumsy at times. The best way to describe him is deciplined, he tries his best to reserve his judgement and has a strong belief in the virtues of forgiveness and determination. These beliefs motivate him to be less judgmental of his company and believes everyone has their own path they must take, he will try to influence but not control his friends positively.

Backstory to follow in a few minutes.
Backstory: Barabass was born with light fingers and a lighter conscience. By the time he was able to lift himself up he was stealing things, and by the time he could run he was stealing everything. He likely stole his own moral compass some point before he was thrown out of his home and sent to live on the streets. Living on the streets was second nature to him and he did quite well for himself until he tried to steal a bauble from an old medicine woman who cursed him with a magical form of narcolepsy. Barabass' fortunes fell into shambles as he would fall asleep right before the money shot moments of his heists and he again found himself destitute. Given the chance to, he's willing to do anything to regain his rich lifestyle and rid himself of his sleeping sickness
ReplyDeleteI'm here! Barabass is here!
